An outdoor ceremony, a candlelit celebration in an old barn, the first dance on a terrace overlooking the vineyards—open-air weddings have a magic that no indoor venue in the world can fully replace.
But they also have their pitfalls. And if you’re not aware of them, you might end up spending your big day in rubber boots instead of high heels. Here are the most important things to keep in mind when planning an outdoor wedding in Austria.
The Weather: Plan, Don’t Hope
Austrian summer weather is beautiful—and unpredictable. Afternoon thunderstorms are not uncommon in July and August, and even a cool evening in mid-September can throw a wrench in the best-laid plans.
My recommendation: Every outdoor wedding needs a Plan B. That doesn’t mean you have to schedule an alternate date—but a tent, a dome structure, or at least a covered area should always be part of the planning. If you think of this as insurance (which you’ll hopefully never need), you’ll sleep much better the week before the wedding.

A meadow can look beautiful—and still be the wrong choice. Here’s what you should pay special attention to when searching for a venue for an outdoor wedding:
- Field Conditions: The turf after rain poses a challenge for heels and catering equipment
- Noise Control: Many municipalities have strict regulations—playing music after 10 or 11 p.m. is often not allowed
- Power Supply: A reliable power connection is needed for lighting, DJ equipment, and catering
- Restroom facilities: Often not available at event venues—plan for portable solutions

What looks fantastic indoors can become a challenge outdoors. Light table decorations blow away in the wind, candles are hard to keep burning outdoors, and flowers wilt faster than expected in the heat.

Hot weather and buffets don’t mix well. Salads with mayonnaise, salmon canapés, or cream-based desserts are a risk on a hot August day—both for the taste and for your guests’ digestive health.
Focus on seasonal, hearty dishes: grilled meat, antipasti, regional cheeses, and bread. And plenty of cold drinks—people tend to drink more when they’re celebrating outdoors than indoors.

The difference between a well-organized outdoor wedding and an improvised one often lies in the small details:
- Provide mosquito repellent—discreet, but readily available
- Umbrellas or shade for the afternoon ceremony
- Blankets for the evening—it gets chilly even in the summer
- Clear signage on the grounds, especially if they are large
- Advance notice to guests: We recommend wearing flat shoes if you expect to walk on grass.
When is the best time for an outdoor wedding in Austria?
My personal recommendation: May, June, and September. While midsummer (July, August) is popular, the afternoon heat can be a challenge—for guests, flowers, and the catering staff alike. May and June offer mild weather and nature in full bloom, while September stands out with golden light and pleasant temperatures.
